¢Á CLAY SCULPTURE FROM EGG FORM

¢Á TRANSLATION INTO KOREAN - "MODERN SCULPTURE",  HEBERT READ

I am a muti-directional style sculptor, because I do not want to confine my art in one or a few styles.  My works are made of a variety of materials: bronze, metal, terracotta, wood, stone, aluminum, found objects, etc.

Through my career, I mastered every possible technique for sculpture, as I knew from traditional ones (casting, stone carving, and welding) to new ones (resin, pneumatic tooling, and mixed media working). As the result, I developed a kind of new method of bronze casting-pouring molten hot bronze into stone, as well as a technique of stone dyeing.

I have worked by depending on my ideas. When I have an idea, I choose an appropriate technique and material for that idea. Of course, formalistic aspect of art is important, but subject is for me more important than formalistic aspect. Even if I do not have my own formal style, the subject of my works has consistency. I am interested in social issues such as crime, overpopulation, environment, etc. I approach indirectly and gently those problems by studying real nature of human being. I am trying to trace social problems to their origin-human character.

My works deal with serious subjects, and sometimes they are comic and cynical. But it is easy to understand them. I want to make viewers enjoy my works without trouble. Especially installation work is very effective to express my idea and to match my style. I am afraid of giving only one answer about any subject in question. Therefore, sometimes I leave those problems unanswered in my works so that viewers may solve them or make their own story.     1998.1
